Premier Teen Program

Data scientists use machine learning to make breakthroughs in the future of technology—from facial recognition to voice assistants like Siri or humanoid robots at Hanson Robotics. In this academy experience, you’ll delve into the complexities of data science and neural networks.

Start with advanced Python concepts to sharpen your coding skills through cryptography. You’ll develop logic-based programs, such as solving complex puzzles and ciphers. Then, build and train machine learning models with Google’s Teachable Machine to explore how AI learns in a fun, visual way. Utilize custom datasets to create image classification models like a sign language translator, emotion detector, or virtual drawing game. Guided by live instructors, you’ll uncover key machine learning concepts through hands-on projects and thoughtful discussions around ethics, privacy, and responsible design. Through this, you’ll explore data science fundamentals by visualizing data, identifying patterns, and applying algorithms with essential tools like TensorFlow and Keras. Then, collaborate with your peers and culminate your work in a data-driven final project.

You’ll experiment with techniques like text classification and data analysis to model predictions for real-world scenarios, such as building an all-star sports team on a limited budget. Develop your voice in this advancing computer science field!

You'll learn to:

  • Develop advanced Python coding skills with cryptographic puzzles
  • Train custom models with integrated machine learning libraries and frameworks
  • Explore industry-standard data science concepts through data visualization and algorithm design
  • Use Tensorflow and Pandas to analyze trends and develop data-driven projects with your peers

Course Format 

This machine learning summer camp is part of an intensive 2-week program running Monday through Friday (overnight at most locations with the option to stay the weekend within the two weeks). Your teen will learn in a lab on an inspiring university campus with a balanced daily schedule of assignment-driven workshops and outdoor/recreational activities. Courses are led by experienced instructors in a small-group setting. Learn more below. 
 

Sample Schedule

With techniques used by industry professionals, students will build Python projects, create image recognition models, and analyze the different purposes of machine learning frameworks.

Here’s a sample of what a week in this machine learning course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of key material and the overall student experience.

Week 1: Python Coding, Libraries & Machine Learning

Students will tap into fundamental coding concepts, like conditional statements and loops, to solidify their skills. They’ll practice writing functions and classes to create a text-based arena battle game.

Next, students will explore a variety of Python libraries, like graphing equations with Matplotlib. They’ll learn how to sort data and design a basic algorithm.

Take a look under the hood of machine learning models—students will experiment with neural networks and build their own models. They’ll use Google’s Quick, Draw! dataset to create a model that guesses what they’re drawing in real-time!

Ready, set, BATTLE! In this extended project, students will design and code an immersive tournament-style battle arena game. They’ll assign custom stats and sprites to each competitor, then see who has what it takes to win it all!

To wrap up the first week, students will iterate and refine their battle arena game. They can add custom features, like an AI statistician that analyzes each competitor and predicts a winner for each round.

Week 2: Cryptography, Cybersecurity, & Interactive Web Pages

In the second week, students will dive into cryptography, starting with Caesar’s cipher shift and progressing to more complex ciphers to encrypt messages in Python code.

Students will explore the fundamentals of cybersecurity, including hash tables and functions. They’ll create a Python program to store phone numbers and refine it with a hashed search technique.

Next, students will learn how to code simple web pages using HTML and CSS. Combining all the skills they’ve built this week, they’ll create an interactive web-based game where players search a website for clues!

The countdown begins! Students will collaborate to test, refine, and customize their interactive web game. They’ll add features like a countdown timer and user-input fields where players can guess solutions to each puzzle.

To bring everything to a close, students will polish their projects and showcase their work in a portfolio presentation!
