Model custom parts for your bot using computer-aided design, then print your creations into reality with a 3D printer. You’ll build and test your work like the Battlebots® pros on your way to the arena, using creativity and teamwork to construct a mechanical marvel that takes the lead.

Once you’ve perfected your bot’s capabilities, step up to the stage and show off its full potential in a BattleBots®-style robot showdown. “It's time for the main event!”

You'll learn to:

  • Build a custom robot with VEX V5 hardware
  • Program behaviors and controls in C++
  • Explore mechanical engineering principles
  • Learn how 3D printers and slicing software work
  • Model and print custom robot parts
  • Compete in a BattleBots®-style championship

Course Format

This course is part of an intensive 2-week summer program running Monday through Friday (overnight at most locations with the option to stay the weekend within the two weeks). Your teen will learn in a lab on an inspiring university campus with a balanced daily schedule of assignment-driven workshops and outdoor/recreational activities. Courses are led by experienced instructors in a small-group setting. Learn more below.

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what each week in the course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of key material and the overall student experience.

Week 1: Intro to BattleBots® Design

Welcome to the BattleBox™! Students will start with safety protocols and standards from the experts at BattleBots®. Then, they’ll form a team and collaborate to build the base frame of their bot.

Students will delve into design methodologies, looking at real BattleBots® champions like Tombstone for inspiration. Then, they’ll learn the fundamentals of VEXcode C++ to program their bot.

Next, students will learn how to maintain and build attachments for their bot, such as claws or spinners. They’ll iterate, customize, and test their design.

If it ain’t broke—break it! Students will learn how to design breakaway parts for their bot, utilizing a 3D printer to make a variety of custom parts. Then, they’ll continue building on their C++ coding skills.

To wrap up the first week, students will sketch ideas for their bot’s final design—will it be a battle shark or nunchuck-swinging ninja? They’ll learn more C++ methods like vectors and arrays.

Week 2: Build, Iterate, Test, & Battle

Students will delve into stats, calculating their bot’s velocity and rotation. Then, they’ll learn how to design a state machine and program special moves for their champion.

Next, students will explore more 3D tools with CAD software. They’ll learn how to design more complex parts for their bot, like a lion’s head emblem for decoration.

To map out their bot’s movements, students will explore linear algebra and plot movements on a grid. They’ll program the bot to print data on its movement as it drives.

Are you ready? It’s time for the main event! Teams will send their bots into the arena for the final battle, putting their designs to the ultimate test. Who will be crowned victor of the BattleBox™?

To bring everything to a close, teams will showcase their final bot design, including the custom attachments and special moves they programmed.

Portfolio-Boosting Diploma & Transcript
