About This Course

Take the lead in this online version of our camp and code your own adventures in Scratch. You’ll build interactive games that send you as far as outer space, blasting away the meteors in your path! Explore core concepts like variables, loops, and events in a creative visual coding environment. Along the way, gain confidence in math and coding fundamentals. Then, use next-gen features to create imaginative video projects that respond to your movements. You’ll experiment with Google’s Teachable Machine—build and train a machine learning model that can identify your dance moves or categorize stuffed animals from soccer balls. Whether you dream of becoming a Python programmer or game developer, your journey starts here!

Course Format

This online coding course is part of a weeklong virtual summer camp running Monday through Friday. Your child will learn online with a small group of other students, in sessions led by expert instructors. Each day includes two hours of live instruction and peer collaboration plus two hours of self-paced project development. Learn more below. 

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this online coding course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience. 

In Scratch, students will dive into visual coding fundamentals. They’ll build an interactive project using webcam video-sensing technology, such as waving their hands over on-screen sprites to make noise.

Get moving! In Teachable Machine, students will experiment with a machine learning model and video motion. They can build a model that recognizes unique dance moves or hand signs like rock, paper, and scissors.

Building on their Scratch skills, students will design and code their own game. They’ll implement a variable score that tracks the player’s progress as they blast away a meteor field or compete against an automated computer player.

Students will develop a project of their own design—whether their focus is coding, game creation, or video sensing. The possibilities are endless! They can further customize their project with sound effects and music.

To complete the week, students will wrap up their projects and playtest them with their peers at the showcase. They can share their Scratch games online where everyone can join in on the fun!

Scratch is a platform for kids to make games, but more educationally, it’s a tool for young minds to bring imagination and ideas to life with code. It’s with these families in mind that we’ve adapted the core elements of our flagship camps to an online format with our Virtual Tech Camps. 

Like our on-campus programs, Virtual Tech Camps feature structured small-group sessions led by expert instructors. Each week includes live teaching of our signature, cutting-edge curriculum, plus peer collaboration, social time, and independent project work. To complete the experience, our Virtual Tech Camps incorporate all the magic of summer camp including games, challenges, and legendary iD traditions!

This course is designed for beginner to intermediate students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace.

Yes! Every iD Tech experience contributes toward leveling up along the iD Tech Pathway. This course is worth 500 XP— learn more about the iD Tech Pathway here.

To run this online course with iD Tech, students will need a Mac or Windows computer (no Chromebooks, unless otherwise specified), a webcam, and a stable internet connection with access to Zoom video conferencing. Additional info on course-specific installation requirements will be communicated after registration.

As courses frequently sell out, we recommend registering early to secure your child's spot. You can make unlimited changes with no fees up to 28 days before the start of your session. If you need to cancel before March 1st, you will receive a full refund of the amount paid. If you cancel after March 1st but still 28+ days before your session, you will receive a refund less the additional fees (if applicable) and a $250 cancellation charge per week. Within 28 days of your session start date, changes are subject to a fee, and no refunds are provided for cancellations.
